Scandale

The thermoelectric power plant of Scandale, whose construction was authorized by the Ministry of Productive Activities in 2004, is situated in the municipality of Scandale (Province of Crotone) in a village called S. Domenica in the central western area of Calabria, a few kilometres from the Ionian coast.
The Scandale facility, which has also been designed for cogenerative operation, is owned by Ergosud S.p.A., while E.ON and A2A share a 50% interest.
The power plant is comprised of two combined-cycle generating modules, each with a nominal power of 407 MW, adding up to a total power of 814 MW.
The power plant is supplied with gas from the national network, through its own 6 km long pipeline, and is connected, via an underground power line about 100m long, to a nearby high voltage grid station operated by the Terna company.
The Scandale power plant, in commercial operation since June 2010, provides work for 40 people and, in addition to Operation and Maintenance activities, is responsible for dispatching power to the Terna grid station.
The primary values guiding the behaviour of the people working at the power plant are safety and the protection of the environment.
Safety
Also thanks to its recent construction, the power plant works actively to ensure the safety of all workers, whether company or contractor employees, having set for itself a “zero accident” target.
Protection of the environment
The Scandale power plant has been designed and built to have a very low impact on the environment by minimising atmospheric emission and effluent generation.
The technical solutions adopted are among the most advanced in the world and make it possible to comply with stringent emission limits, among the lowest in the industry.
Moreover, the plant follows a “zero liquid discharge” model whereby all effluent water is reused, together with some rainwater, so as to achieve a significant reduction in the use of external water resources.
In close collaboration with ARPA Calabria, in order to monitor the quality of the air in Scandale and the neighbouring towns, the power plant has installed an air quality network consisting of three measuring stations whose data are made known in real time.
The future
The power plant has initiated the procedures leading to OHSAS18001 and EMAS certification, which it expects to achieve in the first half of 2012.
