Climate & Renewables

In the field of renewable energies,

we have already arrived in the future

Renewables are a focal point of EON's investment programme. We want to enable renewables energies and its technologies to move away from their present boutique scale and reach the stage of industrial use, thus helping them to achieve a breakthrough. Overall E.ON is investing at least EUR8 billion to 2011 in renewable generation and climate protection projects and will play a leading role in the development of the renewables industry worldwide.

Italy already has a very high production rate compared with other European countries because of the use of hydropower. This rate can be increased further with onshore wind energy and solar energy because the expansion potential for hydropower, offshore wind energy or even biomass tends to be limited for various reasons compared with other European countries.

E.ON already produces nearly 8% of Italy's wind energy and will increase this share if possible. And we will examine the possibility of becoming active in other renewable segments in the future. Solar energy in particular might be interesting for Italy in the medium term. In this sector, we are working on the development of highly efficient thin-film cells that can be elegantly incorporated into facades. In our view, marine energy, which we are currently working on above all in the UK, could develop great potential off Italy's coast.
