Fiume Santo

The thermoelectric power plant of Fiume Santo is located at Località Cabu Aspru in Sassari province. It occupies an area of 153 hectares on the Gulf of Asinara, employs 300 persons, and is one of the most important industrial facilities in northwestern Sardinia.
Six generating groups operate in the plant for total available power of 982 MW. The first two units, which went into production in 1983-84, are fed by fuel oil and have rated power of 160 MW each. Two 320 MW units came on line in 1992-93, fed by coal since 2003. At the end of 2005, two turbogas groups of 40 MW each came on line. Net production in 2007 was 4,260 GWh, equivalent to 36% of total consumption in Sardinia.
Protection of the environment
Because of its natural setting, environmental protection has always been a priority for the Fiume Santo power plant. The coal- and fuel oil-fed sections are equipped with electrostatic precipitators to remove the particulate (powders) from the effluent smoke. The first two production units employ the B.O.OS. (Burner out of Service) technique to reduce nitrogen oxides, while units 3 and 4 have systems to reduce nitrogen oxides (denitrifiers) and sulfur oxides (desulfurizers). Control of the air and soil pollution is provided by a network that monitors an area of over 30 km around the plant. The data collected, along with those measured at the smokestacks, are recorded at the power plant and transmitted at ARPAS, the department of Sassari.
From 2009 onwards the power plant has obtained a certification of the security management system, in line with OH SAS 18001 standard, Certificate N° 14634.
