Innovation

Profitability, Safe Supply, Environmental Friendliness
How do we secure our long-term energy supply in a way that protects our environment and at the same time meets profitability and reliability? It's a big question and at E.ON we're spending millions of Euros researching and developing tomorrow's innovative energy solutions and finding the answer today.
From energy generation to heating our homes
Whether it's the use of renewable energy sources such as geothermal or wind energy, the generation of biogas to natural gas quality, the use of fuel cells in households, or the reduction of CO2 emissions in our power plants, the development of new energy supply technologies is an important part of our work. This is the only way to ensure a sustainable energy supply, which is simultaneously profitable, safe, and environmentally friendly. By using our worldwide expertise, we are committed to extending our market position to shape the future of energy. Developing innovative and efficient energy will enable us to maintain a competitive edge in our industry and build a sustainable future.
innovate.on technology initiative
Technology innovation is at E.ON's core. In 2006, 175 employees in our Market Units worldwide worked in research and development. Our expertise spans the globe and we have the strength and knowledge to accelerate the development of the next generation of energy technology by using our international strength on a local level. Last year, our expert team worked together in joint projects with universities, tested new technologies in pilot systems, or worked on key technologies under the E.ON technology initiative innovate.on.
Support for Universities and Research Institutes
We are committed to making use of the brightest minds across the world. E.ON financially supports the activities of the E.ON Energy Research Center at the RWTH Aachen in Germany. We also support activities in universities other German universities and universities and research centers in the United Kingdom, Sweden, and the USA.
Furthermore, the E.ON research initiative supports specific projects on yearly changing topics.
innovate.on
Innovative technologies form the backbone of our society; protection of the environment is the challenge of our generation. That is why our goal is to play a leading role in the development of key energy supply technologies.
With the "innovate.on" technology initiative E.ON is actively moving toward this goal. This initiative focuses on the operational implementation of research results and their profitable development into our energy supply systems. E.ON believes that two areas, i.e. fossile fuel generation and renewable energies could have a large contribution.
Key current technologies are related for instance to the energy efficiency in fossil fuel-fired power plants, CO2 capture and storage and the increasing use of renewable energies. For sustainable generation E.ON is focussed on offshore wind energy systems and their integration into the power grid, along with the increased feeding of bio natural gas into the gas grid. To achieve these goals, we will invest in so-called "lighthouse" projects, in order to make the transition to commercial utilisation. On the basis of our experience in research and development, these projects have been selected from more than 400 projects that E.ON undertakes each year.
This initiative has resulted in promising technologies and in the prospect of a safe, environmentally friendly, and profitable energy supply. The construction of demonstration projects, such as the most efficient coal power plant in the world with an efficiency of over 50 percent, are milestones in our wide-ranging commitment to these goals.
